From
the Rider's Seat
By Roy Hooper
The normal SoCal weather has finally returned and it made for nice riding weather for our Club rides. We
still have some nice rides planned for 2007 but I am always
looking for rides for the next year so if you have any suggestions,
please let me know.
Speaking of weather, it's HOT out there and some of you will be buying armored mesh jackets soon. Make sure you don't
get a black or dark mesh jacket as this color will absorb the heat and
COOK you even though it's meshed. Silver/grey is a good universal
color so that would be a color to consider.
Membership Renewals
Your Membership is renewed in October which will be here before
you know it. Feel free to renew earlier so I won't be bombarded
at one time. It is still only $12 to renew and you can hand it to
me on a ride or mail a check to
Roy Hooper
PO Box 1067
Ojai, Ca.

Please MAKE THE CHECK OUT TO
ROY HOOPER
Your $12 goes to our fund which we spend on materials to run this Club
and to functions like our Christmas Dinner Party. Plus you get a
15% discount on parts and accessories excluding tires and sale
items at Cal Coast Motorsports.
OVERNIGHTERS
We have 2 overnighters planned this year and if you are thinking about
going it is a good idea to book your rooms now since you can always

Grove on July 28,29,30. We are staying at
Lover's Point Inn
625 Ocean View Boulevard
Pacific Grove
(866) 465-8192
and rates our about $109/night and we will be right on the beach.
THESE ROOMS WILL GO FAST. This motel is 2 blocks from
downtown and 1 mile form Cannery Row- a relaxing walk. Book your
rooms for July 28 and 29.
Our other overnighter is the 17th Annual Stater Bros. Route 66
Rendezvous in San Bernardino on Sept. 15-16. Book
your WigWam for Saturday night at
WigWam Motel
2728 W. Foothill Blvd.
Rialto, CA 92376-5333
(909) 875-3005
Visit our web site to get more detailed info on these rides and once you book your room for either of these rides please email me at so I can add your name to our list.
Any writers out there?
We could use a person or persons to write about our monthly club rides.
You don't need experience, just have fun writing about 10
paragraphs about our ride day. Just let me know on the day of the
ride that you want to take a shot at it.
Ride Safe.

CI July 4 Parade
By Roy Hooper
It was a clear, sunny and cool day as we prepped
our bikes for the Channel Islands Parade. I brought some fresh
fruit bits and Lou supplied 2 dozen donuts. Dave Smith supplied
us with more water bottles.

(Pictured- Mr. Sidecar, Lou & Wendy, Tico, Sparky, Skip and his son, Paul and Sheila, Eric Munck, Joe & Miriam , Robert Bruce and Susan, Paco and Maria, Dave Smith, Joe Bartlett and Roy.)
Lou also invited his sidecar friends Tico and Mr. Sidecar to join us.
Member Eric Munck from Fillmore brought his 2004 Chevy Patriotic
truck to the delight of everyone.

Bill Quan dropped by and told us that after
riding for 60 years he decided to hang it up. Thanks for the
company Bill and to all our Members who attended the parade.

Smitty, above, called me before the parade and asked if
he could join us again since he lived close by but was not a Member.
I said it was good to put a name to the mystery rider and that he
was always welcome to join us.

June Ride
Newcomb's Ranch
By Roy Hooper
Our June ride to Newcomb's Ranch was suggested by our Videographer Jeff Rotter and the weather that day was perfect.
We had a big group show up at our meeting place Carl's Jr. in Ventura
and we headed to Camarillo to pick up Jeff Lardner on his silver FJR.
Our next stop was in Simi to pick up my 20 year old niece Amber
(in the photo below) who has ridden with me in the
past year but joined us for her first Club ride. We then
continued on the 118 freeway to pick up Norm and Bob in Van Nuys.
With almost 20 bikes in tow we head east on the 210 and get off
Highway 2 in La Canada where there are even more bikes waiting for us.
After shaking hands and hydrating ourselves we tackle Hwy 2, also
known as Angeles Crest Highway, up to Newcomb's Ranch for lunch.
The CHP and the LA Sheriff were doing a great job of patrolling
the road to keep it safe for all of us.
After many curves we arrived at the Ranch and parked among the
bikes that go in and out all day. The Ranch is "The Rock
Store" of the San Gabriel Mountains and after a hearty lunch we
continued on 2 and made our way to the top of Mt. Wilson.
I've been up there before and the view on a clear day is remarkable. You really see
SoCal! Today was hazy so we had a partial view but most of
the Members were still pleased. After exploring at the top for
about 30 minutes Jeff Rotter took some videos of us and our machines
and then we headed home, some going north, south and west.
July Ride
Avila Beach
By George Conahey
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Thanks to George Conahey for writing about the
Avila Beach ride. Almost every newsletter is done
completely by me but this is also your Club and
newsletter so just having someone step up and
write about our monthly ride would be a nice
addition to the newsletter. Plus this is a good way
to get to know your fellow members better and
to meet the newcomers and remember their names.
If you ever want to write about a Club ride just
let me know the morning of the ride. Thanks. |
As usual we all met at Carl's Jr prior to our ride to Avila Bch.
Seventeen
riders led by Roy. We met Mark Harris a first time
rider who found us on the
internet. He rides an 07 Suzuki
Boulevard and lives in Newbury Park. Hope he
joins us on future rides.
Upon leaving Carl's we headed to 126 then to Santa Barbara via 101. Weather
was overcast but somewhere near Carpenteria it got nicer.
Had good weather to
Santa Ynez then overcast and smoke y from the fire. We had to be aware of the
fire equipment on the road.Went thru
Los Olivos and headed to Sisquoc via Zaca
Station Rd. Lots of good curves, road need some repairs but all in all
fair.
Weather cooled off in Sisquoc . Gassed up at Beteravia Rd Sta Maria and
added some warmer clothes. Roy called the restaurant to confirm our
reservations, On the road to Avila Bch.
Weather warmed up in Avila. Since Roy had made reservations at The Fat Cat
we were seated fairly quickly.I think that everyone enjoyed the food. The
waitress was very good. She took all our orders together so the food would come
out together. Then she separated the checks and eliminated the confusion that
comes when trying to settle one bill.I thought that was outstanding.
Left Fat Cats en route to Los Alamos. Took the scenic route and all gassed
up in Los Alamos. Headed down 101 toward home. I cut off in Buelton to go the
Chumash.
I took Hwy192 thru Sta. Barbara to Carpenteria so I
would miss the traffic. Good ride even tho' it does go thru town. Lots
of curves, very nice homes, and I was moving along not sitting in
traffic (I don't split lanes).
Headed home. Kissed the wife and relaxed after such a good
ride.

SB Dog Parade
By Roy Hooper
Carla and I attended our first Santa Barbara Dog Parade
which is held on the first Saturday of June in downtown SB. Main
Street is closed all the way to the beach where there are dog vendors
and plenty to do for both dogs and kids.

There were many dogs in the parade and many
dogs watching from the sidelines. This is a great parade and you
really need to experience it yourself to see how much fun it is.
We have it listed on our Ride Calendar for next year as a "go on
your own" event. This is not a MC ride so just bring your dog and
kids and have a great time- we'll see you there. This one day,
the Dog is King.
Here is a photo of Carla's English Bulldog-

For our Members, here is
your chance to win a FREE lunch on any Club ride
you attend by
being the first with the correct answer
to this question. You can win once a year.
Now that we know how the Yamaha logo came about, let's see
who knows what the BMW logo means.
If you think you know the answer email me and I will post the winner here.

Thanks to Jeff Johnson for the BMW question.
UPDATED July 12
On Jul 11, 2007 9:00 PM Eric Grabowski wins with the answer
"The blue-and-white roundel BMW logo alludes to the white and blue
checkered flag of Bavaria. It is often said to symbolize a spinning
white propeller on a blue-sky background, although this interpretation
developed after
the logo was already in use."
